Adding the chatbot to a WordPress site

You need to paste the one-line code from your dashboard (Embedding) into your website. It looks something like this:

This has to go on every page where you want the chatbot to appear — the simplest way is to add it site-wide (in the footer), so it shows on every subpage.

The easiest route

AskWell WordPress plugin

We built our own plugin so you never have to touch code: install it, paste the API key, done. A theme update will not remove it, and the settings screen tells you if something is wrong — for example if your domain is not allow-listed yet.

  1. Install the AskWell plugin. WordPress admin → Plugins → Add New, search for "AskWell". Install and activate it.
  2. Copy your API key. You will find the API key in the AskWell dashboard, on your chatbot’s page, under Embedding.
  3. Paste in the key. WordPress admin → left-hand menu → AskWell, paste the API key and save.
  4. Allow-list your domain. In the AskWell dashboard, add your website’s domain to the allowed domains — without this the chatbot will not answer, for security reasons.
  5. Check the result. Open your website in a private window. The chat bubble appears in the bottom-right corner. If you use a caching plugin, clear the cache.

If you would rather do it manually, or you are not on WordPress, the options below also work.

Manual embedding

If you are not using the AskWell plugin, you can insert the embed code with a header/footer plugin (Insert Headers and Footers, WPCode) or into your theme’s footer.php, right before the closing body tag. The plugin route also survives theme updates.

Verification

After saving, open your website in an incognito window — a small round button should appear in the bottom-right corner. If it does not:

  • Check the page source to confirm the script tag was actually added.
  • Check that your domain is on the allowed domains list in the dashboard.
  • If you have a caching plugin, clear the cache after the change.
